10 Tips on How to Have a Successful Trip to Chicago

10 Steps on How to Have a Successful Trip to Chicago

It is very important to plan when visiting a new city.  There is always way too much to do and not enough time to do everything.  Fortunately, I will be discussing some steps and tips while taking a trip to Chicago!   Follow these steps to ensure that you will have an unforgettable experience in the greatest city around!

Step 1: Plan
Planning is the most important part of taking a trip.  One must always be cautious of the time constraints as well as budget correctly to make sure you have enough money to experience everything.  My suggestion is that you plan certain events for certain days/nights, but you leave your schedule subject to change.  The reason why I say this is because sometimes you will be thoroughly enjoying an experience (i.e. at North Avenue Beach) where you won't want to leave.  Sometimes the best way to do things is to go with the flow.  But again, set up a framework for your trip and be ready to change it around.  This also includes writing down all of the events and places you want to go to.  Be sure to purchase your tickets ahead of time so you won't miss out! For Chicago, you will need at least three nights to experience most of biggest events.

Step 2: Packing
Packing is an essential part of every trip.  You must be sure to pack all of your belongings as there is a crazy amount to do.  Being prepared everywhere you go is essential.  You don't want to experience that frustration where you are missing an important item.  Anyways, make sure you pack the proper attire because the weather can fluctuate in the city, especially since it is right off of Lake Michigan.  I would also like to suggest packing an excellent attitude.  Attitude is key to enjoying any trip.  Getting to experience the Windy City will be incredible!  It is important to have an open mind and be willing to try things you’ve never done before-like not putting ketchup on a hotdog!

Step 3: Transportation
There are many different forms of transportation in Chicago.  The options range from using the train systems (Metra, Amtrak, CTA), the bus system, taxis, walking, etc…Knowing how these systems work will expedite your transportation process.  Since Chicago is such a large city, it is crucial to have efficient methods to get to and from your destinations.  Keep in mind traffic delays during rush hour.  On weekdays rush hour inbound is around 8 a.m. and outbound is around 5:00 pm.  Getting caught in these traffic jams can add an extra hour to your traveling.

Step 4: Meet Some Chicagoans!
Most people in Chicago will be ecstatic to receive a ‘hello’ from a stranger.  Holding conversations with strangers is the best way to see the different perspectives.  It never hurts to converse with Chicagoans because they know the best tips and best spots to visit!  Who knows, you may meet a new lifelong friend in this beautiful city!

Step 5: Find a Hot Dog Joint.
The first thing you should do when you get into the city is find a hot dog joint.  The Chicago-style dog is known all over the world and there isn’t a better place to get them…than in Chicago.  There are joints located all throughout the city so it will be pretty easy to come across one.  My favorite place to go is U.B. Dogs located on the corner of Lake St. and Franklin St.  Every time I go, it is jammed pack with happy customers enjoying the best hot dogs.  You definitely do not want to miss out on this low key spot.

Step 6: GO TO A CUBS GAME
Even though I am a White Sox fan, I will gladly tell you to get to Wrigley Field for the greatest time ever.  The electricity inside and out the stadium is such a phenomenal feeling.  Be sure to get some good seats and be ready to enjoy the 2016 World Series Champions.  Make sure to go early so you can stop at all of the bars right outside the stadium.  Wrigleyville is one of the most known areas in the region.  There is always excellent night life throughout this magnificent town that gives everyone the time of their life.

Step 7: Stopping by a Lake Michigan Beach
Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes, is the host to many awesome beaches!  These Chicago beaches are filled with wild times.  During the summer there are always beach goers, bikers, runners, dogs, and many more.  It is never a dull day at the beach when it’s great weather outside.  Some of Chicago’s most famous beaches include: North Avenue Beach, Ohio Street Beach, and Lane Beach.  Don’t forget that there are numerous outdoor events that fit incredibly well with beach days.  For example, catching the Air & Water show at a beach is a one of a life time experience!

Step 8: Visit the Skydeck at the Willis Tower
This step is a pretty obvious one.  When people think of Chicago, typically the first thing they think is the Willis (previously known as Sears) Tower.  It is the tallest building in the city and it is the most noticeable building in the skyline.  At the very top of the Willis Tower, there is a skydeck that people can go up to, to get the craziest views!  You won’t want to miss going to the Willis Tower skydeck!

Step 9: Experience the Night Life
The night life in Chicago is notorious for having some of the best spots to club and the best bars to hang out at.  Be sure to catch a few refreshments and relax at some of the best locations around.  The social life in Chicago is incredible as everyone is eager to meet new people and have an excellent time.  One of my favorite spots is on the River Walk called Tiny Tap which is a relaxing bar.  Another excellent spot is Prysm Night Club which is always poppin’!

Step 10: Plan Another Trip to Chicago!

Once your trip is over, there is no doubt that you will be planning another trip to Chicago because of all of the incredible experiences you had.  Next time you go, check out some different spots because you can never explore too much in this magnificent city!
